Classic Dwayne Johnson
A review of the 2018 film, 'Skyscraper"
Areigna Ralston
Throughout half of the movie the skyscraper was drowning in flames, yet I didn’t see one single firefighter.
Really?
In this thrilling, action-packed film, Dwayne Johnson plays the role of Will Sawyer. Mr. Sawyer is an expert with security and has been assigned a job in China to secure the world’s tallest skyscraper. While he’s there, criminals invade the building and set in on fire with the rest of the Sawyer family trapped in its walls. Throughout the movie, Sawyer tries again and again to rescue his family no matter the cost.
To save his family, he must go head to head with a building. It sounds ridiculous and that’s because it is. There is no real threat posed by villains, especially because it’s The Rock we’re talking about here. The villains in this film, the real ones, are lame. Their threats are no match for the fire that bursts in, in almost every frame. The Rock’s character never fights the building, but it causes many more problems than the human villains in this film.
Throughout the course of movie history, Dwayne has been given the rep that he is indestructible and fearless. I guess a 3,500-foot tall burning building, bad guys with guns, and a stab wound isn't enough to defeat him, so the writers also gave his character a prosthetic leg. It’s like the writers thought the rest of the challenges he faces would be too easy with all four limbs.
Despite the movies weak villain choice, I enjoyed the humor throughout the film. It was placed in just the right spots, bringing light to the darker parts of the film. Not to mention, The Rock leaping around the Skyscraper was thrilling and kept me on the edge of my seat.
Although there were flaws, The Rock’s daring and courageous character can make any movie watchable. I enjoyed watching this even though it was a predictable and cliche movie.
Nice balance in here. This is definitely a type of journalistic writing that I think you're cut out for. More soon.
